Genuine comfort can be a hard thing to find with the current state of the world. Anxiety has become the new norm and anything outside of that has become fleeting and distant.
I spent the first week or so in quarantine attempting to ease the panic with unhealthy coping mechanisms — constantly refreshing the 24-hour news cycle for updated information, sprawling out on the sofa binge-watching trash tv, eating cereal for every meal, not keeping a regular sleep schedule. I realized as I entered week two of quarantine, this routine wasn’t sustainable and it’s time to face the reality that this may be our situation for a while.
I’ve found great comfort in taking up a few healthy habits that I do by myself and for myself. Yoga with Adriene is a free resource that I was introduced to about a year ago from a customer at Lille. I now wake up every morning and put on a yoga video. Adriene’s demeanor is very soothing and her dog, Benji, can often be found napping next to her mat as she films her videos, which I find EXTRA comforting. Now, before you go awarding me a fitness trophy, I admit that I often will choose videos that are only 5 – 7 minutes long and I usually follow along in my PJs from the night before.
Doing mundane tasks very slowly and deliberately has been really beneficial in keeping me mindful and occupying my mind. I have a lot of plants that typically get water dumped unceremoniously as I waltz by on my way to something more important. This week, I’ve been slowly watering, dusting, and pruning each plant with great care. I’ve also taken to organizing and laundering my entire wardrobe. I’ve said it before, but there is something so meditative about handwashing your delicates.
Putting on real clothes and makeup every morning has been a gamechanger for my mood and for maintaining a sense of normalcy. I’ve been having a lot of fun experimenting with makeup that I wouldn’t necessarily be confident enough to rock in public. Neon eyeliners, dark lipsticks, colorful eyeshadow, fake eyelashes are all part of my daily attire now and it’s a whole lot of fun.
