We had a blast on First Friday here at Lille Boutique hosting an artist’s reception for local artist, musician and model, Skye Sarenana-Velten. Her watercolor paintings and pencil drawings run the gamut, from vast, pastel-hued dreamscapes to entomological illustrations of insects. Her family’s scientific background had a major influence on her work: her mother is a field biologist, and her father is an entomologist, so she grew up with chameleons, walking sticks, and hissing cockroaches wandering around the house. Sarenana-Velten, who sings in the band Floorboards with her husband, has been modeling professionally in Portland for the past two years. She is fascinated by nature and strives to understand the vast universe around her, dabbling in stop-motion animation and other creative endeavors when she isn’t modeling or performing. At their best, her illustrations evoke the dreamlike eloquence of Japanese film director Hayao Miyazaki’s stunning animation, with similar themes of environmentalism, mysticism and the mechanics of flight. Come by the shop anytime this month to view her work in person. Hope to see you soon!
